I used to have an account with 1and1 in their Spanish version, so decided to switch to their UK counterpart since I was happy with the service… Bad bad bad idea.
First I tried a few weeks ago, and their customer service requested a copy of my passport and some kind of proof of address so I could actually continue with the order. Seems they don’t work with non UK residents… In any case, I am ok with sending my passport images around but not so much about bank statements to randon viewers, so I just gave up and let it lie. Cue very serious email about how they have cancelled my order because they take their security seriously “No billing has occurred and you are free to place additional orders, but please note that these will be subject to stringent examination.”
Few weeks later I get reminded that my current domain is about to expire, so I decide to try again sending an extremely blacked out version of my bank statement as proof of address. So I register another domain… and this time no stringent check happens and I get my account instantly. Same paypal payment system. Then I found out that it didn’t have even php or databases (my fault for assuming that even the most basic service would have that, at the price they sell it for) and I decided to cancel my account. And the cancellation went well it seems.
From then onwards, I’ve got mails in German, mails about the cancelled domain being registered, mails telling me that my payment was rejected by paypal, then a customer service representative telling me that they hadn’t tried to charge me for anything, then the same person telling me my account still needed cancelling, then going silent when I found out that actually, the account was correctly cancelled… By now I am just praying that the account is actually cancelled and I don’t have to keep talking with people who have no idea. Still waiting for them to translate that mail in German they sent me with important information too…
So, that’s it for me. I am switching to <a href=”http://www.lunarpages.com/id/tempestkeepcom”>Lunarpages</a> that so far work fine, offer everything I want to and don’t seem to be confused about customer service. And offer a database and PHP/Ruby/etc for the same price that 1and1 UK gives you a static html website.
Now to enjoy the fun of moving my existing website around.
